Wow, has it really been 5 weeks since I last posted? Shame on me! But I have been really busy creating (as well as having a nasty virus) and pretty soon I’ll be sharing some very exciting news with you. But in the meantime I have lots of beady eye candy for you to look at.
I’ve added some new colourways to my range of book thongs. For now they’re made-to-order on my website and in my Etsy shop but I should have some ready made up very soon…
The past week or so I’ve been on a huge ring making binge, I just couldn’t seem to stop! They’re just so much fun to make and fairly quick once I’ve decided on my colours. I’ll be adding them all to my website tonight and in my Etsy shop over the next week…
The June bead collection arrived from the Acorn Club yesterday and I have to admit that I was a little disappointed when I saw the colour…..peach! As we all have our favourite colours, most of us also have our least favourite colours. Well, no prizes for guessing which is one of mine!
I wouldn’t say that I hate peach exactly, I don’t think it’s possible for me to go as far as actually hating a colour but it’s definitely very low on my list, second only to salmon pink! On closer inspection I saw that most of the beads actually have an AB finish so they do have little flashes of other colours. Still, I realised that in order to use these beads to create something I’m going to be happy with, I’d have to mix them with other colours. So out came the colour wheel and my trusty colour mixing books. I’ve discovered that peach goes quite nicely with copper, raspberry and amber and also with blues and greens. So that’s two colour schemes to keep in mind for future use.
But today I wanted to do something simple so I went with the colour that’s on the opposite of the colour wheel, turquoise blue. I’m really happy with the finished hair clip which I’ve made with a frosted flower button and size 11 and 15 seed beads.
For some time I’ve been thinking of different ways to use felt balls and I came up with the idea of cutting them in half and using them as cabochons. This bead is one of my own, made from turquoise blue merino wool, embellished with Delicas and I’ve embroidered around it with seed beads. I absolutely love it and I’m wearing it as I type :) If you’re a regular reader of my blog you’ll know that you’ll be seeing more of these in various colours! This is also my piece for the June Moodboard on Operation Tackle That Bead Stash where this month I’ve chosen blue and silver as the colour scheme.
I’ve been meaning to make another pair of these beautifully horrific skull earrings for ages! This time I left out the rose pattern and just went with the skulls for maximum goth-ness.
And finally here’s a ring I made using a pattern from Heather Collin. Sarah recently did a review of this pattern, don’t forget to visit the blog to see others that were made. I can’t wait to make another!
I’ve been slacking with my blog posts again so I have much to share with you today! The first bit of news is that I’ve finished my biggest and probably last beaded bead tutorial. Requested by a lovely beader who wanted to make a much larger bead, my Jupiter bead tutorial covers a 30mm wooden bead and has a finished diameter of 34mm. Although these can be used in jewellery they would look amazing arranged in a bowl as a home decor feature. And really they’re no more difficult to make than the smaller beads, they just take more time. My comprehensive tutorial guides you through the process a row at a time and with 34 colour photographs they really are suitable for beginners! You can find them in my Etsy shop and on my website along with all my other tutorials and kits.
And talking of kits, I’ve listed the first in my collection of Fairground Attraction kits in my Etsy shop. The tutorial has had a makeover too, with brand new photographs, layout and more comprehensive instructions as well as showing you how to make a looped bail as an alternative way of attaching the pendant.
The first colourway is “Transition”, a gorgeous mix of reds, oranges, greens and golds. I’ll be listing a very limited amount of these kits but there are more colourways coming soon :)
And here is some eye candy of what I’ve been making the last few weeks, all available in my Etsy shop…
Rock Chic Ring
Summer Rain button ring…
Miyuki button ring…
Sapphire and Steel mini book thong…
Olivia book thong…
Nina book thong…
Right, I’m off to work on some more kits!
I’m on a ring making binge at the moment after realising that I don’t have any rings in my shop at all! Persephone is the first, made with a really pretty spring colour combination with beads in purples, blues, greens and lemons all embroidered around a lovely lilac button. The base is adjustable so it will fit any size finger and the top measures 1″ across.
For Sherbet Punch I’ve used warm oranges, golds and greens around a pale green button. Curiously, the button has the letters B.U.M. on the surface, something which made me chuckle as I was making it! I googled it and it seems they were a US clothing company in the 80′s so this could be a vintage button. Slightly smaller than persephone, this one measures ¾” across.
I’m also short of book thongs so I’m going to make a new batch of those too. Here’s another using my Saturn beads and named Titan after the planet’s largest moon (and second largest moon in the solar system), I’ve used shades of moss and olive green. This is a large size, fitting up to 10½” books and with almost a camouflage effect I think it would be perfect for the man in your life.
This is my entry for the Etsy Beadweaver’s challenge, where the theme for February is ‘Royalty Throughout Time’. I’ve chosen Princess Diana as my inspiration, making my own bead embroidered version of her engagement ring which is now being worn by Prince William’s fiancée, Kate Middleton.
Much bigger and what I would call a cocktail ring, I’ve taken a gorgeous glittery blue goldstone cabochon and surrounded it with silver Japanese seed beads and Czech crystals. Available in the usual places, it’s on an adjustable silver plated ring so will fit any size finger. I enjoyed making this piece very much and I hope you like it too :)
